The Japanese and the warm bath
Japan’s climate change is drastic; with high temperature and high humidity in the summer or cold in the winter, so we have love to take baths both to wash away the sweat or to keep the body warm.
There have been a lot of natural hot springs in Japan since ancient time, due to the fact that Japan is located very near several volvanic belts.
Folklore has it that people noticed animals healing themselves by soaking in hot springs, and they began using the hot springs as well.
Animals and humans alike understood the healing powers of hot springs. There were most likely a great number of humans who benefitted.
With the change of the times, we have come to enjoy not only natural hot springs but also “Ishiburo” steam bath. These are located in the caves of the sea shore, and have ties with the Buddhist temple culture. Also SAMURAI used hot springs as the one of their luxuries.
The public bathes called “YUYA” where the common people could enjoy appeared and warm bath customs spread as a mass culture during the Edo period.
Since then Japanese have grown to appreciate the various varieties of baths and have pursued the bath’s charms; cleansing of both body and mind by taking bath, or use for the treatment of disease or injuries. Or to simply enjoy as a relaxing, social place as well.
The ratio of bathtubs in the Japanese home is higher than 95% today. There are nearly 26,000 public bath houses, or roughly 1 bath house per every 4,500 people.
Public baths are found everywhere; Japanese style onsen-ryokan, hotels, sports clubs or exercise gyms, nursing care and some companies.
One well-known Japanese characteristic is that they take in the good parts of another culture and adapt it to their own.
In that way we show individuality as the hot spring nation with no similarities seen in the rest of the world.
The Japanese way to treat our visitors, called “OMOTENASHI”, the environment of healing which coalesce with the seasonal nature, many kinds of warm bath equipment, the technique of the energy saving and thorough safe hygiene management, arethe points that we should be proud of .
